Sussex County Junior Badminton

About Us

Sussex County Junior Badminton, formerly known as SSBA - Sussex Schools Badminton Association, was formed in 1967 with the sole aim to encourage the development of Badminton in Sussex amongst boys and girls through competitions, coaching and matches. It is affiliated to Badminton England, the sport's governing Body in England, and is a Sub-Committee of Sussex County Badminton Association.

SCJB is a non-profit making entity, run and organised by a group of highly motivated volunteers who all share one thing in common: the love for the game of Badminton and a desire to provide young people the opportunity to play the game. Any excess of income over expenditure is retained and utilized for the future benefit of the sport in Sussex.

SCJB runs squads for young players from Under-11 up to Under-21 years of age with Teams representing the County in formal competitions. It also runs several tournaments and regular coaching for its players.

Badminton has thrived in Sussex since the formation of SCJB with many players reaching International standard and even Olympic medalist status. We aim to develop the sport in Sussex for future generations.

Coaching

Within Sussex, each age group’s Squad has a paid qualified CRB checked Professional coach. They are paid from the squad fees and income generated from other SCJB activities. The Coaches are contracted on an annual basis and are appointed by the Committee of SCJB. The Coaches have their own Sub-Committee which produce policies on selection and other matters and they act in liaison with the SCJB Committee. We are lucky that we have very experienced and Nationally recognised Coaches working with your children. Within the County there are also freelance professional Coaches who are available to provide private lessons. Some Junior Clubs provide Coaching and there are several other organisations running academies eg.(Hot-Shots and FastStep Badminton), performance centres (Horsham & Arun Club)and group coaching. Some schools also run after school Clubs and breakfast Club.

Child Protection

SCJB has a Constitution in which it has adopted the “BADMINTON England Child Protection Policy” which is very detailed and can be found on their website www.badmintonengland.co.uk. In addition you can see from the structure chart above that there is a Child Welfare Officer who stands in committee. This person should be the first point of contact should any issues of this nature arise.

Getting Involved

As you can see from the structure, each age group has a “Parent Representative” who acts as a link between the Committee and the Parents. Any matters arising that cannot be dealt with on the ground by the Squad Manager/ Coach may be raised at a Committee meeting as a last resort. The Parent Rep posts are for one season only and attendance of meetings is not compulsory, but aims to reassure parents of the fairness and conduct of Officers and gives a voice to the “silent majority”. Parents within each squad are expected to nominate a representative at the start of the season. Information will be distributed at the first squad session. Should no representative be nominated, there are no grounds for any complaints to be made. In addition to the parent rep, there are many other posts within SCJB that need filling. Raffles are run at tournaments to raise funds, and volunteers run a snack style café at some events. If you are interested in taking up a position within the above structure, you should contact the Secretary, who will advise you of the process. Volunteering for any other useful activity should be in liaison with the Squad Manager or the Chairperson. SCJB always needs extra helpers and many parents have skills which can be put to good use. Please consider getting involved and volunteering to help. We need you!!
